MSc Positions in Medical Robotics
Description
We are developing sensing, actuation, and control technologies for medical robotic systems. We welcome prospective MSc students interested in combining engineering design, computational methods, and experimental research to address challenges in medical robotics.
Successful applicants will join the Medical Robotic Systems (MRS) Lab at METU's Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Technologies Research and Application Center (ROMER) in Ankara, Türkiye.
Research Topics
- Magnetic tracking and NMR sensing: NMR probes, RF instrumentation, signal processing, sensor configuration, and magnetic localization methods.
- Electromagnetic actuation: Electromagnet design, magnetic field modeling, optimization, thermal management, and experimental validation.
- Continuum robots and steerable catheters: Design, fabrication, mechanical modeling, shape sensing, and control for minimally invasive interventions.
- Robot-assisted ultrasound and image guidance: Robotic perception, depth sensing, calibration, ultrasound image processing, and robot control.
Specific MSc projects will be discussed based on applicants' research interests, experience, and available opportunities.
Education & Experience
Applicants should:
- Have a background in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field
- Have strong motivation for research and thesis-based MSc study
- Have good oral and written communication skills in English
- Be able to work on-site at METU in Ankara
Experience in one or more of the following areas is an advantage:
- Programming and numerical analysis, preferably in Python, MATLAB, or C++
- Electronic circuit design, RF instrumentation, embedded systems, or data acquisition
- Electromagnetic simulation, finite element analysis, or thermal management
- Mechanical design, CAD, fabrication, or experimental prototyping
- Robotics, dynamic modeling, optimization, or control
- Signal processing, image processing, computer vision, or machine learning
Applicants are not expected to have experience in all of these areas. Relevant coursework, student projects, internships, and research experience can demonstrate preparation for the preferred topic.
Scholarship & Financial Support
Funding is available for a limited number of MSc students. Funding opportunities and terms will be discussed during the interview process.
Timeline
Interviews are tentatively planned for December 2026. Selected candidates may start their MSc studies in the Spring or Fall 2027 semester, subject to METU admission and confirmation of funding.
Eligibility & Inclusion
Applicants must have a TOEFL iBT score of at least 80/120.
We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and particularly encourage women interested in medical robotics to apply. We aim to provide an inclusive research environment where students can develop their ideas, build experimental expertise, and contribute to advances in medical technology.
